Goal Shooter Kiera Austin has been named the 2017 Canberra GIANTS Player of the Year at Netball ACT’s Awards Presentation held tonight.
Austin was a focal point for the Canberra GIANTS working tirelessly in the shooting circle area throughout this year’s Australian Netball League (ANL) earning high praise from her teammates and opposition players.
Austin’s performances throughout 2017 also saw her promoted from GIANTS Netball Training Partner to a contracted athlete in the Suncorp Super Netball competition.
The 20-year-old topped off an outstanding season by being selected in the 21 and Under Australian team that finished runners-up at the 2017 World Youth Cup in Botswana.
The Canberra GIANTS finished the home and away ANL season in second position before going down to eventual champions the Western Sting 72-66 in the semi-final.
GIANTS co-coach Maria Lynch paid tribute to Austin.
“Kiera has been tremendous for the Canberra GIANTS this season and is a worthy winner of the Canberra GIANTS Player of the Year award,” Lynch said.
“She has a great ability to read the game and provide a target for our mid court players.”
“Her shooting accuracy, calmness under pressure and commitment to the team made her a key contributor for the GIANTS this season.”
The Canberra GIANTS Coaches Award went to Amy Parmenter who was rewarded for her outstanding training ethic, on and off court dedication and performances throughout the season.
Other Netball ACT award winners at tonight’s presentation night included Hayley Mason who took out the ACT U17 & Under State Team Coaches Award, while Grace Hill was awarded the ACT U19 & Under State Team Coaches Award.
Mason displayed fantastic leadership both on and off the court both in the preparation phase and during the week of Nationals.
Hill was also a strong performer throughout Nationals working tirelessly in the mid-court whilst still contributing defensively where she averaged two intercepts per game.
Netball ACT General Manager Benita Bittner said the awards presentation was an opportunity to celebrate what has been another tremendous year for netball.
“What a great night it was to celebrate netball in the ACT community and I would like to congratulate all the winners on the night,” Bittner said.
“The night was a great opportunity to celebrate our elite athletes, but also provided a platform to acknowledge our members within our District Associations who volunteer year round to provide opportunities to participate in netball.”
“Strengthening the ties between our grassroots members to our most elite athletes is a priority for Netball ACT moving into 2018.”
“Our partnership with Netball NSW is strong and both organisations are committed to building the culture and fan base around the GIANTS family and we recognise this will not be possible without the tireless work of our passionate and dedicated volunteers in our local Districts.”
“It was great to have the night well attended and we look forward to growing the evening into the future.”
