The 2019 Suncorp Super Netball fixture has been released and GIANTS Netball now know the order of teams they will be facing as they look to make a third straight Finals appearance and go one step further in securing their first ever Premiership.

The team will be heading back to their second home in Canberra again in 2019 and they now have the name of the team who they will be facing in their ACT-based game – the Queensland Firebirds.

2019 will see the GIANTS take on the Queensland Firebirds at AIS Arena in Round 11 on Sunday, 4 August. This is a new opponent for netball fans in the ACT, as the last two matches held at AIS Arena in 2017 and 2018 saw the GIANTS host the Adelaide Thunderbirds and send them home with losses of 53-38 and 63-44 respectively. Fans packed AIS Arena in 2018, with a sell-out crowd turning up to cheer on the GIANTS and proving that the love of netball runs deep in the nation’s capital. This new match-up is sure to bring the crowds out once more.

With players such as Gretel Tippett and Gabi Simpson on their roster, the Firebirds have proven to be a tough opponent for the GIANTS. They handed the GIANTS their hardest loss of the 2018 season (64-50) and the lessons learned from that are sure to fuel them when they come face-to-face again in 2019. Both teams have won two of their four previous meetings and they should continue to test each other in 2019.

It’s going to be another big year for Suncorp Super Netball in 2019, after an active off-season where almost every team made significant changes to their starting ten, and GIANTS Netball will be the only team in the league to not come up against a former player from their Club. They are also one of only two teams to have nine Australian players in their starting ten – their one international being English Roses superstar Jo Harten.

Beyond their match in the ACT on 4 August, it will be a season where GIANTS have a relatively even split of home and away games week-to-week. The team will start and finish the regular season at home and will have two stretches of away games in Round 4 and 5 and Round 7 and 8, although Round 8 will take place in Sydney against the Swifts. Their longest homestand will come late in the season, with two home games in Round 11 and 12 (the ACT match).

The 2019 season will pause for the Netball World Cup, with a four-week break scheduled between Round 9 and 10.

GIANTS Netball General Manager Michael Anderson is thrilled to be bringing Suncorp Super Netball back to the ACT once again in 2019.

“GIANTS Netball can’t wait to return to the ACT in 2019 and bring with them another exciting game of Suncorp Super Netball. The last two years we have been able to showcase world-class netball in Canberra and the crowd numbers have shown that there is a real hunger for the elite product there.

“In 2019, we will be taking on the Queensland Firebirds and we are beyond delighted to be able to host them at AIS Arena and give fans in the ACT another thrilling match to enjoy.

“The assistance of the ACT Government has been instrumental in us being able to make Canberra our second home and the support of all the fans in the territory means so much to us. We love being able to bring netball to the ACT,” says Anderson.
