The Canberra GIANTS have announced their 14-player squad that will compete in the 2018 Australian Netball League (ANL).
The Canberra GIANTS team will once again consist of ACT and NSW players, providing a great opportunity for players to showcase their netball talents on the national stage.
The ANL is the feeder competition for the Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) making it an important competition for the development of players with coaches keeping a watchful eye on young talent coming through the ranks.
ACT players will train in Canberra throughout the week alongside the Canberra GIANTS development squad before joining their NSW teammates for training sessions in Sydney on a regular basis in the lead up to and during the ANL season.
Canberra’s Sharyn Hill will return as one of two Canberra GIANTS Co-Coaches and will oversee training sessions in the ACT, while Maria Lynch also returns and will oversee the training for the NSW athletes.
Both Co-Head Coaches led the inaugural 2017 Canberra GIANTS team, who claimed third in their debut season of the ANL.
“To once again be apart of the Canberra GIANTS in 2018 is incredibly exciting,” Lynch said.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Sharyn and the athletes in 2018 and to build on what was a super inaugural year.”
“It’s a privilege to work with the future stars of our game and to be part of their pathway.”
“The ANL provides such a great platform for this progression. The standard of competition is high and a huge step up for the athletes in terms of intensity both at training and competition.”
Canberra based Sharyn Hill said she was also excited to be returning with the Canberra GIANTS in 2018.
“It is a great opportunity to consolidate learning’s from the inaugural year and continue to grow the program,” Hill said.
“The links that have been established in 2017 enable greater training and competition opportunities through the ACT and NSW pathway”.
Netball ACT General Manager Benita Bittner said the Canberra GIANTS team provides an important pathway for local players to reach their potential.
“To have the opportunity to play against high quality players in a leading domestic competition is a great foundation for our young players to build their senior netball careers on,” Bittner said.
“It also provides players with an opportunity to push their future claims to play for GIANTS Netball in the new Suncorp Super Netball competition.”
The ANL will commence in May 2018.
