MEDIA RELEASE- Wednesday 26th June 2019
The Canberra GIANTS head to Melbourne this weekend for the DUANL finals series, taking on the Victorian Fury in the semi-final at the State Netball and Hockey Centre, Saturday June 29th at 3pm.
The team has had mixed form leading into the final rounds of the Deakin University Australian Netball League, with a few new faces coming into the team throughout the season to make their debut.
Coach of the Canberra GIANTS Melinda Clarke said of the newcomers “We have had five players make their ANL debut this year. Eliza Burton and Amber Brophy are two local players that we have really seen make an impact this season. ANL is a steep learning curve, and all of the players new to this environment have really risen to the challenge and are excited to head into their first Finals campaign.”
“We have great leaders around them with Taylah Davies, Georgia Marshall and Maddie Hay helping to guide them through this experience.”
As for preparation against the Victorian Fury, the Canberra GIANTS last took the court against the Melbourne based team in Round One of the DUANL losing out in both matches, however with a full season Clarke is confident in the Canberra GIANTS ability, “With the week off we have been able to have a couple of really good hit outs to finalize and refine our team going into the Finals”
“As a team we have developed a lot since we last met the Fury in round one. They are a good team, but we think we match up well on them. We will look to be playing our best netball consistently across all four quarters, in finals netball we can’t afford to have any lapses in our execution.”
This weekend marks the third consecutive year that the Canberra GIANTS have made an appearance in the DUANL finals, an achievement that the franchise is extremely proud of;
“We are really excited to be in the Finals series three years in a row, the depth of talent across the team is impressive and their agility and ability to adapt to various positions across the court will hold us in good stead for the Finals series.” say’s Nicole Bowles, Acting General Manager for Netball ACT.
“We wish them all the best for this weekend, and we look forward to watching the franchise continue to grow and succeed. Its an exciting time to be a part of the Canberra GIANTS”.
The winner of the clash will head to the Grand Final game Sunday 30th June at 12:30pm, whilst the runner up will play in the Bronze medal match at 10:30am.
All four matches will be live streamed on the Netball Australia Facebook page.
