Canberra GIANTS secure their place in the finals

The Canberra GIANTS have claimed two from two this weekend, securing their place in the Deakin University Australian Netball League (DUANL) Finals.

For their final round the team headed north to the Sunshine Coast, to take on the Territory Storm.

Game 1 | Saturday 23 June

The final round started off with speed and strength in the centre-court from both sides. Both teams were bolstered by Suncorp Super Netball inclusions, by Territory Storm shooter Cara Koenen and Canberra GIANTS defender Kristina Manua in the circle.

The Canberra GIANTS got an early lead in the first quarter 18-7, and then extended their lead to 37-12 after the first half.

In the second half the Canberra GIANTS had another strong start, and were effective in moving the ball down the court and capitalised on important turnovers. The team opened up a 34-goal lead at three quarter-time, and then extended to finish with a final score of 70-29.

Georgia Marshall was thrilled with the teams win “It was great to have Keira Austin and Kristiana Manua on court to help start the game off strong, and Georgia Clayton had an impressive performance. It was a big team effort, whenever there was a loose ball it was surrounded by orange”.

Game 2 | Sunday 24 June

Only one game sat between the Canberra GIANTS and the DUANL Finals, and the Canberra GIANTS came out extremely strong, putting six quick goals on the board in the first five minutes. The team extend the lead to finish off the first quarter 18-7.

The centre court defence was maintained throughout the entire game, with Amy Parmenter and Georgia Clayton nailing intercepts from across the court, which extended the margin to 37-12 at half time.

The accurate shooting from all Beryl Friday at 100% and Angelia Frketic at 90% allowed the team to shoot their way into the finals, finishing off with a sold win of 70-29.

Teigan O’Shannassy said it was a big team performance, with prefect timing before the finals “It was a great win today. Everybody got the chance to take the court today, which builds confidence of the whole team going into the finals”.
