The Canberra GIANTS have produced their best performance of the season to defeat defending champions and league leaders Victoria Fury 51-44 at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne.
The Canberra GIANTS led throughout the four quarters to record a stunning victory against the Fury who have won the past four Australian Netball League titles.
The first quarter was a tight affair with the Canberra GIANTS holding a 13-7 lead at the end of the first term.
The Fury were able to narrow the margin to five goals at halftime (23-18) and following a solid third term the Canberra GIANTS lead was just three goals (36-33).
But the Canberra GIANTS held their nerve in the last quarter to come away with an impressive seven goal victory.
Canberra GIANTS co coach Sharyn Hill praised her side for the way they held their nerve at the pressure moments in the game.
“It was a tremendous effort by all the girls against a side that has been the benchmark for the past four years,” Hill said.
“We contested every contest and our defence was outstanding.”
“To hold a side like the Fury to 44 goals was a really good effort and its a credit to all the players for the pressure they applied.”
The Canberra GIANTS can go to the the top of the Australian Netball League with victory in game two tomorrow (Sunday, March 26).
