Pacific School Games wrap up

Last week the ACT sent the 15/U and 12/U ACT teams to Adelaide to compete in the 2017 Pacific School Games (PSG). The PSG stage the world’s best multi-sport school competition for Australian and international students.

For the first time netball was included in the PSG, and it was a very exciting experience for everyone involved.

12/U ACT Team, by Lyndsey Simcoe

The ACT 12/U Netball team had a wonderful preparation in the lead up to PSG. All of the girls worked hard to improve their skills and the team felt ready to take on the best netballers in the country. We were also extremely excited that netball was going to be part of PSG for the first time.

This year we were lucky enough to have support from Netball ACT with specialist coaching from Canberra GIANTS Coach Sharyn Hill,  ACT U19s 2017 Head Coach Adele Bullock and ACT U17s 2017/18 Head Coach Kim Symons. We also had coaching and advice from U17 and ETA Athlete, Holly Hancox.

The U12s Nationals competition is a double round robin and the girls came away with four wins, two against NT (24-19 and 30-15) and two against The Budgies (23-19 and 31-21). We were also extremely competitive in all of our other games with some very close results against Victoria (21-24) and WA (15-16). I was so proud of each the girls and the way they approached every game with determination and always supported each other as a team. They all learnt a lot during the week and are excited to get back into their district colours and show off their new skills during the 2018 Junior Rep season.

As officials we’d like thank each of our players and their families, along with the U15s athletes and their families, for their support and encouragement throughout the program. I’d also like to extend a personal thank you to our assistant coach Kirsten Duffy, our manager Mel Saunders and the U15s officials, Nat Keen, Alisa Spackman and Bronwyn Motion for going above and beyond in their support during the week.

15/U ACT Team, by Natalie Keen

The 15/U girls played 11 games across the six competition days, which included a round robin, semi-final and grand-final playoff.

This year the team were extremely competitive against all of the states and territories. Notable mentions would include our big wins against the other smaller ‘state’ teams of Tasmania and Northern Territory, as well as our close games against the two grand final teams. The girls lost to Victoria by four goals and in a nail-biter and unlucky loss, went down to NSW by three goals. Both of these teams played off in the Grand Final match.

For this team one of the highlights would definitely be the naming of Malia Harrison in the Australian Schoolgirls team, along with Eliza Rixon as a shadow player.  Not since Shannon Priestly was named in 2004 has there been an ACT player named – to have two players named within the group is outstanding, and indicates the competitiveness of the team.

Both of the girls will look to continue their representative experiences in the Netball ACT pathways. Malia will play for Australia in May of next year in Queensland, whilst Eliza will wait to see if an opportunity opens up.

Special mention also goes to Emma Flick-Booth who was also presented with the Amy Safe Award for her exemplary on-court behaviour and outstanding contribution to her team while representing Budgies Indigenous Netball in the 15 years and Under team.

We would like to thank everyone that was involved with the girls this year. ACT has a supportive environment and a number of coaches contributed to our specialist sessions including; Kim Symons, Kate Durham, Melinda Clarke and Sepi Hawke. A number of past players also put together teams for our match play experiences. In particular I would like to thank Alisa Spackman, who was invaluable as my assistant coach this year and Bronwyn Motion who continues to be a fantastic, supportive manager to the girls.
