Queanbeyan look to continue fine start to season

Queanbeyan will be out to continue their fine start to the Canterbury State League netball competition when they take on South Canberra on Friday night (28 March).

Queanbeyan got their season off to a flying start last Friday night when they defeated defending champions Arawang 42-35 before going down to last year’s runners up Canberra 45-41 on Sunday afternoon.

Queanbeyan captain Leanne McGrath said given the tough draw one win from their opening two rounds was a pleasing start to the season.

“No one would have really given us a chance against Arawang so to get a win over last year’s champions was a tremendous effort from the girls,” McGrath said.

“Then even though we were unable to back it up against Canberra (last year’s runners up) in terms of getting the win the effort was still there, which is all we ask each week.”

“Now our focus turns to South Canberra who will be desperate to record their first win of the season so it will be important that we turn up with the right attitude and intensity.”

Queanbeyan has earmarked this season as a year whereby they look develop a number of their junior players from division three.

From last year’s side they’ve lost Carly Res (recovering from injury), Amy Morschel (work commitments) and Farrah Marolt (recovering from shoulder injury).

However on a positive note they’ve gained the services of Hills District goal shooter Emma Coglan who will be a handy addition.

In other games Canberra will look to maintain their perfect start to the season when they take on Tuggeranong, while Arawang meets Belconnen.

All games will be played at the ACT Netball Centre in Lyneham commencing at 6pm.
