Friday 3rd of May saw the start of the 2019 HCF State League, which includes Canberra’s five netball Districts and Queanbeyan in the Round 1 draw at SolarHub Netball Centre.
In the first upset of the season, Belconnen overcame reigning premiers Arawang 48-44 in a tightly contested game. On paper, Belconnen are the team to beat this season and they came out to prove that point. Belconnen have seen the return of Samoan national, Sepi Hawke who is joined by hot shot goal shooter recruit Jo Pivac who has moved north from Tuggeranong to play with her former Canberra Darter teammate.
Queanbeyan reaped the benefit of a strong athlete recruitment drive in the off-season with a new formidable defensive unit in sister Hayley and Alana Bowyer and Leila Basic. Teamed with sharp shooter and 19 Under State team representative, Olivia Clark, QNA could be another team to watch. QNA defeated South Canberra 50-31.
In the third and final game of the round, Canberra was too strong for Tuggeranong 63-51.
