This week was our Reconciliation Round where we highlighted how we can all be a voice for generations.
When it comes to reconciliation, we all have a role to play, whether big or small. The past week on our socials, we highlighted the amazing work our state league associations are doing in establishing the connections through what some might seem simple – a netball uniform.
Hearing the stories of these designs has brought about a connection in the community that appreciates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.
Our Welcome to Country was performed this year by Shaenice Allan. Shaenice is a Ngunnawal custodian with ties to the kamilaroi and bundjalung nations. Shaenice has played netball in Canberra since the age of 16 and retired from state league playing with Belconnen in 2020. This was performed prior to the Division 1 games at 7.30pm.
It was fantastic to see to so many of our Canberra community in attendance during the ceremony and stay to enjoy the Division 1 games.
Thanks to the Allan family for providing bush tea and biscuits that were on sale over the weekend. All proceeds will go to Netball ACT Indigenous Fund to help support First National netball athletes.
We also had a few umpire highlights this week with Tom Fletcher receiving his A badge on Friday night and Sam Eade making is state league umpiring debut on Sunday.
