Netball ACT officially commenced the 2024 HCF State League season with a launch on the picturesque shores of Lake Burley Griffin this morning.
This year, the league has grown stronger with 29 teams across six associations – Arawang, Belconnen, Canberra, South Canberra, Tuggeranong, and Queanbeyan. These associations are the heart of netball in the Australian Capital Territory and surrounding areas.
As well as a great competition for our more experienced athletes, the HCF State League serves as a crucial platform for emerging athletes. Paving the way for those destined to compete in the Netball National Championship in Victoria and the Australian Men’s and Mixed National Netball Championships in Brisbane in the coming months.
CEO of Netball ACT, Dr. Sally Clark, highlighted the surge in popularity and commitment from athletes and associations, leading to the extension of the season to 15 rounds, up from the previous year's 10 rounds.
A noteworthy change includes shifting matches for the younger age groups to Wednesday nights, providing a midweek showcase for budding talents.
"With under 17s and under 19s matches now taking place on Wednesday nights, it offers a unique opportunity for young talents to shine under the midweek lights", Dr. Clark said.
Reigning Division 1 premiers, Tuggeranong, are eagerly anticipating their return to the court on March 15th, acknowledging the heightened competitiveness brought about by the extended 15-round season.
Carly Symons, Tuggeranong Division 1 captain, remarked, “each team has their own strengths and talents, and so every game is going to be tough and competitive which is awesome to have in our competition.”
In the Men's League, defending champions Canberra are eyeing a fifth consecutive title in 2024, commencing their campaign with a Grand Final rematch against Queanbeyan in Round 1.
Canberra captain, Lachlan Paolo acknowledge Queanbeyan as a strong contender and expressed confidence in his teams strong pre-season training and addition of new talent.
"We have a few new faces and some old heads so we'll see how it goes but we have had a big pre-season and are ready", Mr Paolo said.
The new 2024 season sees the inclusion of special rounds, including the Reconciliation Round emphasizing unity and cultural understanding, and a Pride Round in June celebrating diversity and inclusivity. Netball ACT is committed to supporting these initiatives and fostering a sense of community.
A heartfelt thank you was extended to the associations, athletes, officials, and supporters who contribute to making the league the premier netball competition in the ACT. As the season unfolds, Netball ACT encourages everyone to embrace the spirit of competition, camaraderie, and their shared love for this remarkable sport.
Here's to a thrilling and successful 2024 HCF State League Season!
